The beginning of Nathan's blog

Nathan is a young man in our congregation that has been diagnosed with a form of cancer. I have created this blog for him in case he wants to use it. I've never done this before and I don't know if he has. The purpose of this blog is for Nathan to keep us updated on his situation, and also for others to provide support and encouragement to him. If Nathan is not interested in doing this, then this blog will be deleted.

The ripples of your story are reaching far. We are the parents of a friend of your roommate at Goshen. (Alex Bouwman) Also if I understand correctly Bob and Mag Richer Smith are your pastors...........they used to be ours......... You have been in our thoughts and prayers ever since Alex sent us the first email. May God continue to hold you and your family in the palm of HIS hand as you face this challenge together. Hi Nathan,
A big thank you to the friend that posted this site. What a wonderful way to keep your many friends informed on your progress. My prayer for you today is that God's gracious presence will sustain you in the difficult treatment times to come. My many fond memories of you playing with Chris and spending every Sunday together brings some very present motherly protective instincts. How I wish I could make it all go away.
Love and Peace

Hi Nathan and family,
I was glad to see the link to your daily progress in the Goshen College Faculty e-newsletter today. Your smiling face in the rotating pictures feature on the Goshen College main web page reminds us daily to pray for God's strength for you and your family. "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11. We're claiming that verse for you.

Hi Nathan
We appreciate you keeping in touch through Nathan's Blog. We continue to hold you in our thoughts and pray for your complete recovery. We have placed you in God's hands and know he cares. We are keeping Ryan and Sara tonight for a sleepover. They love craft projects and are making favors for Thanksgiving. They are edible turkeys made out of cookies , candy and frosting. They made 3 dozen of them. They made plates for different families including the Widmers and Detweilers with orders we are to deliver them when we come to Iowa for Thanksgiving. Merv and Ardith

Dear Nathan,
You don't know us, but our boys are in school with Caleb. They think he's a pretty nice guy, so he must have a great big brother.
We are in prayer for you and are at your service.
Trust in the Lord with all your might.

Nathan:

It is just after 3 a.m. and my heart is heavy over your and your loved ones' circumstances.

O God, the strength of the weak and the comfort of sufferers. Mercifully accept our prayers and grant to thy servant Nathan the help of thy power, that his sickness may be turned into health, and our sorrow into joy, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Hi Nathan and family: Keith Zehr here from snowy Akron, New York. We have appreciated your updates on your blog site and I am blessed by your attitude, spiritual growth, and courage during this time. I remember when Rolland Smith shared with me how much closer he became to God through his experience with cancer. I also remember selfishly thinking that I hope I never have to get close to God for that reason. But clearly there is a spiritual gift that comes with a personal struggle such as yours, and your words bear eloquent testimony to a "peace that passeth all understanding".

Connie and I have a favorite "Nathan story" to share with everyone. When we moved to Crooked Creek Camp in January of 1994, it was extremely cold and we were blessed with everyone's help unloading our moving truck. One of the hard working young lads helping that night was Nathan, who was in 6th grade at the time. It was my job to stand at the door and tell eveyone where to put the boxes they were carrying in. As a practical joke, a friend of ours in Buffalo had written some comments on the sides of some of our boxes, supposedly designating what was in the box, only it was completely made up for humor's sake. After reading the side of one of the boxes, Nathan came into the room and in front of everyone innocently asked me a question: "Where do you want me to put this box of False IRS tax returns??"

It was a great moment we will never forget. May God bless you in the days ahead and over this Christmas season!

Keith, Connie, Nina, Jared, and Maggie Mae Zehr
